It’s the Vernal Equinox. Halfway between the two solstices. And around here, we’re seeing strong signs of spring. The daffodils have been up for a while, but the Bradford pears, the forsythias, and the cherry trees are peaking with the maples ready to pop.
This is a wonderful time of year in central Virginia when the days are longer and the air is finally warmer. Time to really enjoy the outdoors. Time to embrace the light, both literally and metaphorically.
Some recent developments . . .
My Books
All my novels—five now—are out there, being read and—hopefully—enjoyed. Reader Kevin Doyle sent me this photo of (El Norte) in the neighborhood library box on his street. The book, which covers a lot of ground, is doing its own traveling!
My new book, a post-apocalyptic thriller, is taking its time moving through the various editing stages, but it should be published in the next month or so. I’ll let you know when.
The TV/Movie option for New York 1609 has been pushed back due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year.
My Sports
While waiting for the 50-meter outdoor swimming pool to open, I’ve been playing a lot of disc golf. And I love it! Especially when I hit a good shot. Like this one:
It’s a tricky 330-foot par 3 at a nearby county park, and I hit it in 2 for a birdie! And that included a 100+-foot putt that I skipped off the ground and right into the basket. Combining a little skill and a lot of luck, it was jaw-droppingly awesome.
My Life
One of my later-years joys is keeping up with family and old friends.
Lynn and I got a surprise message a few weeks ago: my niece Kira was going to be in town visiting friends with husband Leo and famous baby Justin. We met with them at a nearby cafe on their drive back home. You can see how alert and happy the little guy is. His Mom, too. And you can also see that I’m already working on my tan—another way to embrace the light—in preparation for summer swimming.
Old pal Richard Marks recently sent me this photo of a project we worked on together about 40 years ago in Los Angeles. It was a line of minimalist high-concept posters, and he still has his on display. They continue to look good!
So on this weighty day, may you embrace the light of the Vernal Equinox and feel the warmth of new beginnings within you.

Just subscribed to this new place – if it’s interesting, I read it.
Thinking: how can I make MY advertising reflect ‘high-concept’ for my books.
This getting old thing has its benefits – so much data!

Lots to learn, lots to do. Happy Equinox, Alicia.
